Since PSYCHO, the Hitchcock film, was done in B&W whatever blood would be shone didn't have to actually be red!  

Instead, Hitchcock used chocolate!

Now, there have be reports that the chocolate used was either BOSCO, or HERSEY'S. 

Either way it photographed extremely well - and scared the hell of the audience.
